چکیده مقاله:

Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer in women whose incidence in low riskregions such as our country is increasing. Results of various studies have shownthat weight gain in middle life and obesity in post-menopausal women areimportant environmental factors for Breast cancer development. On the basis ofEpidemiologic studies, Isfahan province including Kashan city has highestincidence of Breast cancer in Iran. In order to find important risk factors forbreast cancer, we evaluate the prevalence of obesity in cancer patients inKashan.Material and methods: In this retrospective study, we extracted theinformation s about age ,height , weight, and Body Mass Index (BMI) inadmission form repertoire of 188 breast cancer patients referring to a privateoncology clinic in Kashan.Discussion and results: In this study, 186 female patients with breast cancerwere analyzed. 87 of whom (46.77%) were in premenopausal age groups and 99(53.23%) were in postmenopausal age groups. The most prevalence of diseasewas in the age range between 40 to 50 years that included 38.3% of patientswhile it is 10 years lower than the most prevalent age range in westerncountries. On the basis of BMI, in premenopausal age groups, 49.43% ofpatients were overweight (BMI 25 to 30), 21.83% were obese (BMI between 30to 35) and 10.34% of patients had severe obesity (BMI more than 35). Inpostmenopausal age groups, 49/49% of patients were overweight, 16.16% wereobese, and 11.11% had severe obesity. The prevalence of Breast cancer in firstdegree relatives was below 10% and in other relative was below 20%. Withrespect to low rate of familial Breast cancer and high rate of overweight andobesity in our studied Patients, we must consider obesity as an important riskfactor for Breast cancer development in our society and special measures forprevention of obesity in general population must be done or weight reductionshould be encouraged especially in the middle aged and older adults women.
