The Impacts of Restriction of Foreign Workers to Construction Projects

The construction industry is highly dependent on foreign workers to execute the works in the industry. Consequently, the high dependency on foreign workers has significantly increased the number of foreign workers in the construction industry. Therefore, the government has decided to restrict the recruitment of new foreign workers beginning on February 2016 to reduce and combat the dependency of foreign workers. However, the restriction of foreign workers had impacted the performance of construction projects in the construction industry. Thus, the objective of the research was to study the impacts of the restriction of foreign workers to the construction projects. The research has employeda quantitative method in which questionnaires was distributed to G7 construction companies in Selangor for data collection. The findings revealed that the restriction of foreign workers by Malaysian government had negatively impacted the construction projects and companies. An increase of the construction cost of projects was the main element that significantly impacted the construction projects due to this restriction. Therefore, this research will provide a platform to construction companies to formulate best strategies to address the impact of the restriction of foreign workers
