Value Preservation of underground infrastructure through focused maintenance management

Abstract: Tunnels have a high economic value. Owners of tunnel infrastructure all have one goal in common: to maintain operational safety, serviceability and structural safety of their tunnels as economically as possible over the long term. To achieve these goals, a condition assessment is inevitable in order to focus the process of value preservation. The data collection is supported by modern digital technologies such as laser scanning and digital mapping software. Yet, the data are not only to be administered, but must flow into a long-term maintenance and value preservation concept. The core question arises as to how the acquisition and further processing of data should be linked in order to plan future actions and costs required to maintain tunnel safety and availability. This paper points out some key questions concerning value preservation concepts for tunnels and details the challenges for conceptional planning.
