چکیده مقاله:

For effective academic reading, selecting appropriate reading materials is very important. This research examined selecting reading materials for academic Iranian EFL students. The sample consisted of 82 male andfemale academic Iranian EFL students from some governmental and nongovernmental universities in Tehran. The sample collected through convenience procedure. A questionnaire designed in order to collect information on the importance of criteria involved in selecting reading texts and the extent these criteria are considered. After collection of data, the information analyzed with SPSS.The analysis of the data revealed that the students’ interests, topic, appearance of the text, students’ needs, exploitability, and relevance are the most important criteria involved in selecting reading texts but the extent these criteria are considered in selected reading texts is not high. Since selection of appropriate reading texts is veryimportant in the country, it seems that some changes are required to ensure that reading texts are selected appropriately
