Uptake in Formulaic Focus on Form in Advanced EFL Communicative Interactions

Studies on focus on form (FonF) have been limited to the examination of uptake in relation to non-formulaic forms (i.e., grammar, pronunciation, andvocabulary). The present study investigated the occurrence of uptake following three categories of formulaic sequences (FSs), namely, collocation, lexicalbundle, and idiom in incidental FonF and possible relationship between uptake rate and the types (reactive vs. preemptive) and the linguistic foci of formulaicfocus-on-form episodes (FFEs). The data consisted of 30 h of audio recorded classroom interactions from advanced adult English as a foreign languageclassrooms. The analysis involved transcription and codification of uptake moves in formulaic and non-formulaic FFEs. The results indicated a significant difference in the occurrence of uptake in formulaic vs. non-formulaic FFEs. While there was a significant relationship between uptake rate and the types offormulaic FonF. It was not the case in relation to uptake rate and the linguistic foci of formulaic FFEs. The findings provide implications for pedagogical instruction of FSs
