چکیده مقاله:
Some EFL learners often have difficulty in learning and remembering phrasal verbs and lexical collocations in an effective way because of lack of active involvement in the teaching and learning process. Therefore, some effectivetechniques of teaching and assessing are required to help the learners to be able to learn, retain and recall phrasalverbs and lexical collocations provided in school text books. Consequently, this study aimed to investigate the impact oforal questions and written quizzes as formative assessment techniques on EFL students phrasal verb and lexicalcollocation learning and retention. In this study, 90 male intermediate EFL participants received a Nelson Proficiency test to make sure they were homogeneous. Then, from among them 75 participants were selected and assigned intowritten quiz and oral question experimental groups and a control group with no assessment in a quasi-experimentalstudy. The results of three sets of scores from each group with 25 participants were compared and analyzed after taking part in pre-test, immediate post-test, and delayed post-tests by using SPSS through one way ANOVA and paired samples T-Tests. The results revealed that written quiz and oral questioning as formative assessment techniques are effective in learning phrasal verbs and lexical collocations and retention of them after a six month time interval
