An Investigation on Natural Lighting Levels in Students’ Dormitories at EMU in Famagusta,North Cyprus

Natural light has a significant effect on human’s performance. It satisfies human s psychological and also physiological health, plus providing the perception of space while reducing energy consumption. The current study reviews the quality of natural light in three selected dormitories at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) in Famagusta, North Cyprus. The aim of this research is to improve the quality of daylight in dormitory rooms which has a direct influence on the students’ life and their daily actions. The methodology of this study is based on observation, questionnaires, photography, maps, and sketches. Observation and physical analyses have been used for surveying the spatial qualities, and questionnaires have been designed to illustrate the quality of life of the residents. Results of the collected data indicate that the brightness level in the aforementioned area is poor, and generated dissatisfying conditions would cause students to use artificial lighting during the whole day. In overall, various strategies should be considered to promote daylight quality in order to provide a better place for students to live. It is required that everybody be informed about advantages of using daylight in buildings, so to increase the size of openings to receive sunrays into the interior spaces; moreover, it is suggested that designers be obliged to consider natural light in buildings by law. Considering these points, the performance of students would be increased, and also the electric consumption would get reduced as well.
