Possibility of Producing Nano Fibers from Medium-Speed-Spun Nylon 6/Polypropylene Blended Filaments

Blends of polypropylene, nylon 6 and polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride as compatibilizer were spun into continuous filaments yarn using a melt spinning unit at the speed of 2000 m/min. The yarn samples containing 87.5% w/w nylon 6.25% w/w polypropylene and 6.25% w/w polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride were drawn in a drawing unit with draw ratio of 1.3 and 2.6. Samples were treated with formic acid (98%) to dissolve nylon 6 components that form the matrix of the blend that leaves the other component as micro and/or nanofibrils. The extracted fibrils were found to have diameter less than one micrometer. The diameter of the fibrils decreases with draw ratio.
