Subtitling in Didactic Cartoons: The Case of Religious Instruction

The purpose of this study is to determine whether subtitling of didactic religious cartoons needs alterations or not. In this study the descriptive analysis of English subtitles in five movies called Best Benefit, The Brave Child, Imam Prayer, Wrong Way, and The Companion of Afflicted were compared with original sample scripts. The researcher paused the films sentence by sentence and tried to find translation. After watching the films several times and comparing English subtitles with their original script sentence by sentence, she wrote every sentence with its applied alteration on a separate piece of paper. Then she counted the number of sentences for every alteration. Finally she calculated the number of sentences on percentage out of 011. Therefore, researcher could find 355 sentences with transfer alteration out of 100 sentences in these five films. The subtitlers of films under studies used these strategies the most. They are written in order: transfer, dislocation, imitation, condensation, resignation, deletion and decimation. Two strategies were not used at all, expansion and transcription. The findings will be useful for those who are interested in audiovisual translation, subtitlers and those who want to be subtitlers and also can be used by non-native viewers
