Encouraging Iranian EFL learners towards Speaking with Manifestation of Images and Content, a Semiotic Analysis

چکیده مقاله:

No one cannot deny the importance of speaking ability in EFL classrooms. Many EFL learners are afraid of speaking ability, their hands are trembling and they sweat. Infact, they feel embarrassed about talking or they feel shy. Many instructors and teachers make many efforts for reducing this stress and encourage their studentstoward speaking. Many different techniques have been used and they are effective. These techniques are psychological strategies or tools for reducing stress. But in thecase of the textbook, fewer attempts have been made. In this research, the researcherswanted to talk about hidden aspects of conversation activities. For this aim, the researchers used the semiotic model of Saussure and social semiotics of Kress andvan Leeuwen (2002) and analyzed one Conversation part in Prospect three( New published EFL textbooks used in the third grade of junior high schools in Iran). The results showed that conversation and its accompanied image have been chosen for reducing the anxiety and stress of students and asks EFL teachers to pay attention to these hints and inform students about these aspects.
