Corrosion performance of self-healing coatings containing oil-filled microcapsules

Despite the advances in modern coatings, the vulnerability toward physical damage remains as a crucial problem. Among the various available methods [1], application of healablematerials in coating formulations shows potential for improving the durability and enhancing bulk mechanicalproperties of the coating layers. Self-healing coatings possessthe ability to repair in response to damage in the material [1]. One of the most common and versatile approaches of selfhealing is the embedding liquid healing agent filled microcapsules through the coating, which rupture upon crackpropagation and releases the healing agent into the damaged area [2]. In some publications linseed oil is proposed as healing agent for anticorrosion coatings [4], but the onlyevidence provided in the literature are some salt spray pictures and no detailed study on the corrosion protection abilities ofthe healed coatings is reported yet. In this work corrosion performance of a model self healing coating filled with linseed oil as healing material, was studied.
