Mechanical properties of a water based self-healing coating containing pre-silane-treated microcapsules

In this study, tensile strength properties of a water-based coating containing various wt % of linseed oil-filled microcapsules were evaluated. Pre-silane treated ethyl cellulose with three different trimethoxysilane coupling agents was used as the shell material and linseed oil was used as the core compound for microcapsules preparation. The results showed improved tensile properties of the coating films containing silane treated microcapsules compared with their un-treated counterparts. This is because, modification of microcapsules with trimethoxysilane coupling agents increased interfacial compatibility between microcapsules and latex especially for 3-Aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane microcapsules (APS-EC).
