Evaluation of electrical power generation using micro turbines in the distribution water network in the north of Tehran

Small hydro technology is extremely robust (systems can last for 50 years or more with little maintenance) and is also one of the most environmentally benign energy technologies available. The use of small power plants on the water distribution network (WDN), before pressure reducing valve (PRV) was suggested as a basic approach to energy saving, produce clean energy and recycling and produce electrical power consumption for controllers and loggers that installed on PRVs. In this study, electrical power generation potential and feasibility of using Pelton turbine was investigated and important design parameters of that was mentioned and a case study on WDN in Tehran's District 1, zone1 was done. As a result, by assessment of potential of electrical generation by Pelton turbine, we found that potential electrical power is about 706 kW that from this amount, about 180 kW consume for data loggers and controllers installed on PRVs and other amount have the ability to save and even sales to electric power companies. The proposed impulse turbine, has a very low Pressure drop and does not create a disturbance in the PRV. Also blade of turbine is a Pelton wheel type and permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) was selected because of variable flow and pressure in WDN.
