REDISCOVERING THE DESIGN CONCEPT OF TRADITIONAL HOUSE AT COASTAL REGION IN LIBYA

This paper focuses on a study of traditional houses in the coastal areas of Libya. It is the study to rediscover the architectural characters and styles which are traditionally integrated with environmental adaptation and the local culture. In this manner, the true factors could be rediscovered for present and future reference in the housing industry in this region. The study focuses on factors related to the house design and building construction considering potential factors of the traditional architecture. The study finds that the most important factors in the traditional house design are application of traditional design, the used of natural building material, integration of Islamic values, the design of house appearance and climatic approach to gain for thermal comfort. In order to translate the design concept into practical ones, the research study is conducted to the design of the traditional house in Misurata, Libya.
