In this study, the sea surface temperature in the middle and southern parts of the Caspian Sea for 2004 was studied using the three-dimensional ocean model COHERENS. Simulation results show that, the winterwater temperature of the coastal area of the Caspian Sea was 4 to 7 degrees lower than the middle CaspianSea region. During summer the temperature of the shallow coastal waters in these areas was much higher compared to the middle region due to its shallower depth. In the summer the eastern coast of the middle part of the Caspian Sea experiences an upwelling that are closely related to the predominant northerly winds insummer. According to this phenomenon the temperature of the sea surface in the eastern coast of the middle Caspian Sea is cooler than regions further away from the coast by about 5˚C. Satellite SST (Sea SurfaceTemperature) data often show relatively colder waters along the coast with filaments penetrating offshore from the upwelling region and these have a relatively good coordination with simulation results on the same day.
