چکیده مقاله:

This study aims to address the issue of how Iranians close their telephone conversations and this study investigates conversations with regard to social variables such as the age of participants, their gender, their politeness in conversations, the differences in the manner of saying goodbye between Iranian women and men, the differences of utterances they use in their conversations in different situations, ru- dar- bayesti (state/ feeling of distance out –of- respect) and taarof ( ritual politeness) of conversations, and how people of different ages close their conversations with different interlocutors such as family members, intimate and unintimate friends, strangers, and the opposite gender. Data were collected from ٤٧ participants through administrating a questionnaire survey in which we investigated participants to provide a descriptive account of characteristics of Iranian telephone conversation closings. The findings indicated that all the conversations follow specific patterns. Most of the participants did not say goodbye in a direct manner. Before saying goodbye there was a pre-ending part, in which some people are more direct and certainly pre-ending was not too long for them and others may be for some reasons like feeling of distance-out- of- respect or ritual politeness prolonged their pre-ending parts of their conversations.
