A Study on the Use of Discourse Markers

Discourse markers are considered as an important element in conversational and written language and also in interactions among people. Discourse marker is usually a word or phrase that is mostly syntax-independent and will not change the truth conditional meaning of the combined segments, and it has got an empty meaning. Different languages use various discourse markers, fillers or words along with different conceptions. In order to be able to communicate successfully one should be aware of the appropriate use and function of connectives. This introductory paper would be beneficial for teachers who have to prepare the students to apply and comprehend different discourse markers appropriately in written and spoken language.
