The present study investigated the potential of implementing reading strategy instruction in Persian in raising learners' reading comprehension ability. To conduct the study, 30 Iranian university male and female students were selected based on a convenient sampling procedure. To collect the necessary data, two types of instruments were employed, a proficiency test and Active book (intermediate). The participants of the study took part in reading classes in which the conventional method of teaching reading was practiced. For the second phase of the course, the researcher taught the participants the strategies of reading in their mother tongue or in Persian. The statistical procedures confirmed that teaching reading strategies in the learners’ mother tongue can significantly affect their reading performance. The results of the study may be beneficial for the material developers, teachers, as well as language learners to maximize the output of reading comprehension.
