چکیده مقاله:
Breast cancer is the one of the most common cancer women worldwide and accounts for thehighest morbidity and mortality. Oxidative stress is implicated in development of breastcancer. Oxidative stress is defined as an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS)generation and the antioxidant capacity of a cell which includes both small antioxidantmolecules and antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), which cannormally remove the reactive oxygen generated by basic physiological function. The first andmost important ROS in the body is superoxide anion. SOD is the one of the most abundantantioxidant enzymes in body that catalyses the dismutation of the superoxide anion intohydrogen peroxide. The aim of the present study was to evaluated the activity of serumsuperoxide dismutase in erythrocytes of breast cancer patients. The present study has beenbased on 38 women with newly diagnosed breast cancer and 38 healthy volunteers. Healthysubjects age 39/61±0/926 and breast cancer patients were 40/78±0/847 years old. Bloodsamples from both groups were collected after overnight fasting and they were kept in -70until day of examination. Superoxide dismutase activity were estimated using Randoxcommercial kit for evaluation of enzyme activity. In this study, a significant increase in theactivity of Superoxide dismutase (SOD) was seen in breast cancer patients compared whitcontrol subjects (P<0.05). The significant increase in SOD activities indicates the formation ofmore superoxide radicals. Increased generation of superoxide anion as ROS can induceoxidative stress that may be a cause for induction of breast cancer. In Conclusions, determination of superoxide dismutase activity might be useful in clinical prognostic of breastcancer patients.
