Effectiveness of group cognitive behavioral therapy on decrease neuroticism and increase conscientiousness of nurses

This study aimed to investigate the effect of group cognitive behavioral therapy on the sleep quality and personality traits of nurses. The present study is a quantitative research of a pretest-posttest quasi experimental type with a control group. The statistical population were nurses in the city of Tehran. In this study, the targeted sampling method was used and female nurses who referred to psychological clinic were studied. After completion of questionnaire female nurses were selected who obtained a higher score in the field of neuroticism and those who obtained a lower score in the field of conscientiousness. They were divided into three 12-individual groups and were randomly put in three groups of control experimental and placebo. The members of experimental group participated in group counseling of cognitive behavior therapy every week for 120 minutes. Then, posttest was given to each of three groups of experimental, control, and placebo. The instrument in this study was the Big five personality test (NEO). NEO-Personality Inventory that was created by Costa McCrae (1985) firstly normalized by Kiamehr(2003) in Iran and its reliability was obtained 0.78 in this research indicating acceptable reliability of this questionnaire. Analyses of data were done using SPSS software version 19. Covariance test was used for testing hypotheses.The results of the present research showed that group cognitive behavioral therapy has led to nurses’ neuroticism decreased (0.239) and conscientiousness increased (0.724).
