This paper affords the development and creation of a sensitive new optical sensor that is quite selective to Hg (II) ion in aqueous solution. The sensing element, the newly synthesized 1-(3-methylpenyl)-3-(2-methoxycarbonylphenyl) triazene, incorporated into a plasticized poly (vinyl chloride) membrane, is able to determine Hg (II) ion with a high selectivity over a wide dynamic range from (5.0-115.1μg L-1) at pH 7.5 with a lower detection limit of (0.67μg L-1). The optode membrane’s response to Hg (II) is fully reversible and reveals a very good selectivity towards Hg (II) ion over a wide variety of other metal ions in solution. Overall performance characteristics of the sensor are evaluated and it has good reversibility, wide dynamic range, long life span, long- term response stability and high reproducibility. The proposed optical sensor gives proper outcomes in applications including direct determination of Hg (II) ion in environmental real samples.
