The Effect of Genre-Based Instruction on the Reading Comprehension of Different Text Types: A Case of Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners

This research investigated the effect of genre-based instruction of different texts on reading comprehension of Iranian EFL learners. For this purpose, 60 learners were selected from the total 90 EFL intermediate learners with the age range of 15-17 studying at Sahab institute in Shahre- Ghods. All of the learners took a Preliminary English Test (PET) for homogenization prior to the start of the study. Then, the participants were divided as the control group, and the experimental group for starting the treatment. Next, the researcher used three different genres (Science-fiction, biography and historical) through second language learning to measure the rate of reading comprehension by using these kinds of genres. During the treatment of the study, the experimental group received three different texts based on different genres while the control group did not receive any treatment. For collecting data, a final genre questionnaire was utilized to find out the rate of interest among learners toward that kind of genre. The analysis of the ANOVA results indicated that the participants of the experimental group performed highly in reading comprehension because of being exposed by different genres particularly historical genre. It was concluded that genre-based instruction especially historical genre can lead students to an effective and better reading comprehension
