Constituents of Essential oil and Antibacterial properties of Semenovia suffruticosa extracts from Iran

Semenovia suffruticosa is one of the species of Semenovia genus within the family of the Apiaceae (or Umbelliferae). The aim of this research is identification of essential oil constituents and evaluation the antibacterial properties of various extracts. The essential oil of S. suffruticosa were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/MS. Antibacterial activity of S. suffruticosa extracts was evaluated for the first time. Ethanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate and aqueous leaf extracts were tested by the disc-diffusion method for activity against common animal and human infectious bacteria. GC/MS analysis identified sixty three compounds, The main components comprising 43.5% of the oil were cis-ocimene (12.9%), linalool (9.5%), γ-terpinene (9.0%), α-terpinolene (7.4%) and p-cymene (4.7%). Pseudomonas aeruginosa demonstrated the highest sensitivity against the extracts with a 10-15 mm zone of inhibition. This research demonstrated that the extracts of S. suffruticosa showed relatively good antimicrobial properties and considerable antibacterial activity of the extracts and existence of useful constituents in essential oil of S. suffruticosa encourages more elaborate investigations in this respect.
