چکیده مقاله:

Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) is introduced as a method of studying a water drop impacting a deep water pool, specifically its penetration after the collision. The general formulation of the PLIF method along with the experimental setup is described. Various experiments for drops with different impact speeds are considered. The images captured from the experiments are illustrated and the data extracted from these images including penetration structure and depth are presented. It was found that the drop penetration is enhanced at low impact speeds which was attributed to the vortex ring generation. At higher impact speeds, no vortex ring is formed and, therefore, the penetration is less pronounced.
