Wave modeling performance in the Nowshahr’s coastline

Wave characteristics are one of the most important factors in design of coastal and marine structures. Therefore, an accurate prediction of wave parameters is considerably important. In this project, MIKE 11 SW, the third generation spectral model has been used for the prediction of wave parameters. The field data set of Nowshahr’s harbor has been used for testing the performance of the model. Winds for forecasting the waves of this region included of 11 years-data collection which were gathered (10311 data) by national meteorological organization for prevention of repeating calculations for same winds in this long time period, wind related data were statistically analyzed and with considering standard estimations, a mostly same winds were separated and some of them (more than 58 separated winds) with their own frequency and especial repeat rate were used as raw information for predicting the waves. It is important to note that using calculative as well as statistical techniques, output data of MIKE 11 were calibrated with actual and measured data of the Nowshahr’s buoy in order to obtain results of model which would be in accordance with reality. According to obtained results, dominant winds of region were detected. Then by using wind data, wave information such as height, direction, period of dominant waves, etc. were obtained with SW and wave total pattern of the Nowshahr were got. The simulation results were compared with the real data, which revealed that the resolution of MIKE11 SW for forecasting Tp is better that Hs. The results of the present simulation also indicate that MIKE11SW underestimates Hs and overestimate Tp.
