Applying a novel DEA model to assess the performance of academic departments in a university

Universities play an active and important role in the development of a country. They are centers for generating ideas and knowledge which relates to the development of a country’s economy as well as the quality life of its citizens. Therefore it is challenging task to measure relative efficiency of universities due to the fact that universities are complex organizations that utilize multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. This paper illustrates the real world application Joint Multiple Layer Data Envelopment Analysis (Joint MLDEA) model to measure relative efficiency of 33 academic departments of Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman using data collected for the year 2311- 2312. The input and output indicators used in this study are those contributing to teaching and research performance. Empirical results confirm the efficiency of Joint MLDEA model based on discrimination power even with considering a large numbers of indicators.
