The Magic of Uncertainty

We live in a world of dramatic and incessant change. What worked yesterday may no longer be relied on, and what we once knew as true may no longer apply. In this turbulent sea of change we must also change if we are to succeed or even surviv e. Whilst we may recognise the need to change, our approach often contains a deep paradox. We seek to move from one position to another, from where we are to where we need to be, from problem to solution , but in doing so we deny the very essence of change. We seek to make the journey without the inconvenience of travelling, to change without being changed. We see change not as the action of changing, but merely the transposition from one state to another. As a result we move from one static frame of a film, to the next, but we experience nothing of the magic of movement, or the power of change, and simply remain static at some new point on our journey. I believe this paradox lies at the heart of the difference between successful and unsuccessful change. Indeed it differentiates between change and the mimicry of change that is the reality of much ineffective improvement effort. In this paper we will explore some of the realities of change and begin to challenge the paradigm of our current thinking.
