A Facile And Effective Approach For The Synthesis of Xanthendiones Under Solvent-Free Conditions

A simple, direct and efficient method for synthesis of xanthendiones by condensation of various aromatic aldehydes with 5,5-dimethyl-3,1-cyclohexanedion (dimedone) under solvent-free conditions using acid activated montmorillonite as an acidic nanocatalyst is described. Montmorillonite is a very soft phyllosilicate group of minerals that typically form in microscopic crystals, forming a clay. The products were formed in excellent yields and the acidic catalyst was completely heterogeneous. The advantages of this method are short reaction times, easy work-up, easy preparation of the nanocatalysts simplicity in operation, atom-economy and absence of organic solvents
