چکیده مقاله:

Contemporary studies of metacognitive psychology focus on how metacognitive strategies can help learners ameliorate and enhance their reading comprehension. Not only do metacognitive reading strategies play a crucial role in students’ improvement in apprehension of different types of texts, they also develop students’ academic and educational performance. Therefore, a need was felt to accent on this aspect in educational and scholarly studies. Metacognition has been defined as knowledge of one's own mental processes or, thinking about one’s thinking and in the case of reading comprehension, it refers to the conscious process of conceiving and comprehending the texts and materials by a student or a learner. Since all language learners are not aware of these strategies, they need to be taught to them as a part of the instructional program. This paper reviewed literature on metacognitive strategies and their connection with reading comprehension to demonstrate their effects on reading comprehension of EFL language learners.
