The Impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence on English Language Learning: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Perspectives

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has become one of the most influential technologies in modern education and has attracted considerable attention in the field of English language learning. AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and other large language models provide learners and teachers with new opportunities for language practice, personalized learning, and educational support. The purpose of this review article is to examine the impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence on English language learning by exploring its opportunities, challenges, and future perspectives. To achieve this objective, a structured review of recent scholarly literature related to AI and language education was conducted. The selected studies were analyzed using a thematic approach to identify common findings and major research trends. The review revealed that Generative AI can support the development of writing, vocabulary, grammar, reading, and speaking skills through personalized feedback, immediate assistance, and increased learning accessibility. The findings also indicate that AI technologies can promote learner autonomy and assist teachers in preparing educational materials and learning activities. However, several challenges were identified, including concerns related to information accuracy, academic integrity, ethical issues, privacy, and overreliance on AI-generated content. The review concludes that Generative AI has significant potential to enhance English language learning when used responsibly and in combination with appropriate pedagogical practices. Future research is needed to investigate long-term learning outcomes and effective strategies for integrating AI into language education.
