Trust in Artificial Intelligence How emotional factors shape perceptions of trustworthiness in human-technology interactions

Artificial intelligence technologies are advancing rapidly, and trust has become a central component of human-artificial intelligence interaction. Inappropriate levels of trust may lead to misuse, abuse, or disuse of such systems. Thus, identifying the factors that enhance perceived trustworthiness is critical. Various factors enhance trustworthiness in artificial intelligent technology. The present study examined the role of emotional expressions in artificial intelligence and their relationship with general, cognitive, and affective trust. Using a two-condition experimental design, ۶۰ participants were exposed to an artificial intelligence system that displayed either emotional or non-emotional expressions. Participants then evaluated the system in terms of general, cognitive, and affective trust. The results indicated that emotional expressions significantly enhanced perceived trustworthiness, particularly affective trust. These findings suggest that users respond to artificial intelligence systems in ways that parallel interpersonal interactions, as affective cues influence their trust judgments. The results provide important implications for the design of future intelligent systems, highlighting the value of incorporating emotional expressions to foster appropriate and sustainable trust in artificial intelligence technologies.
