چکیده مقاله:
Speaking is one of the most demanding aspects of learning English because it requires learners to coordinate linguistic knowledge, cognitive processing, social awareness, and emotional regulation while communicating in real time. Although students may acquire substantial knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, they often struggle to use that knowledge effectively in conversations, discussions, and other authentic communicative situations. This article examines the role of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in improving students’ English speaking skills, with particular attention to fluency, grammatical accuracy, pronunciation, vocabulary use, interactional competence, and confidence. Using a library-based analytical and review approach, the study synthesizes established theoretical perspectives and empirical research on communicative language instruction, classroom interaction, task-based learning, corrective feedback, and speaking assessment. The analysis suggests that communicative teaching can create more meaningful opportunities for learners to express ideas, negotiate meaning, respond spontaneously, and develop the ability to sustain conversations. Activities such as information-gap tasks, role-plays, collaborative problem-solving, interviews, and structured discussions can help transform English from a subject primarily studied for examinations into a practical means of communication. However, the effectiveness of this approach depends on more than the number of speaking activities conducted. Teacher preparation, appropriate task design, manageable class sizes, students’ proficiency levels, assessment practices, and a supportive classroom atmosphere all influence learning outcomes. The article argues that successful implementation requires a balanced integration of meaningful communication, explicit language instruction, targeted feedback, and systematic assessment. It concludes that Communicative Language Teaching is most productive when speaking is treated not merely as a final demonstration of learning but as a central process through which language competence develops.
