The examination of the effect of wind catcher on the Identity of city

of Yazd with a long and rich history and culture is well known as city of Baud – Geers (wind catcher or wind tower). Mainly the four sided Baud – Geers have become part of the identity of Yazd , an exemplar of a desert city in coping with natural forces for many centuries, the same is true for one sided Baud- Geers of Aghda, a village that has turned to a small town through the past decades.Recent development and growth of Yazd city, with a population of over 400000, is not anything like the city experienced through many centuries and after Qajar period the city went through the developments influenced by modernism, so the image of the city has changed drastically. Aghda, a small town and with a population of near 5000, has grown and developed much slower than many other cities and have preserved its image and identity, but that is changing too.In this paper, city of Yazd and Aghda will be analyzed and compared according to one of their major architectural and city planning element which have been the most sustainable way of coping with hot and arid climate and the most generator of city identity.The number of Baud-Geers of Yazd has been decreasing and recent development and old houses adaptation to new functions have not continued to functionalize the Baud- Geers, so there is a good chance of weakening the image and identity of both cities.This paper aims at proposing the ways to bring back the Baud – Geers use, so the people will gain the motivation for caring and repairing the structural and architectural conditions of Baud – Geers as a useful element and enhance the chance of preserving them. Following the concept of natural ventilation and using Baud- Geers as suction or stack effect, will be proposed as a way of sustainable solution for new developments and hoping for a new and related identity to the past.
