چکیده مقاله:

Olive oil industry yearly generates about 200.000 tons olive pomace in Turkey as a byproduct. There is no effective utilization area in industry for this cheap material. Concerning the environmental, economic and asphaltpavement performance related aspects; this byproduct is investigated as a bitumen modifier in this study. For thisaim, some extra treatments were made to raw olive pomace and the final modifier was obtained as a water free very fine oily dust. This olive pomace modifier was used in proportions of 1, 3 and 5% by weight in base asphalt cement (70/100). Conventional properties such as penetration, softening point, temperature susceptibility and stripping resistance of modified and unmodified binders were determined and compared. Results show that the olive pomace increases penetration and decreases softening point of asphalt cement. This softening effect is favorable for resistance to fatigue and cracking damage. Additionally, it increases the stripping resistance viaimproving the bond between aggregate and asphalt coating. Also, this anti-stripping effect is very favorable for durability and performance of hot mix asphalts in service life.
