چکیده مقاله:

The evolution of design theory since the second half of the twentieth century has been accompanied by the gradual development of approaches that conceive of design as more than a predefined problem and a linear problem-solving process. However, this evolution cannot be explained simply as the replacement of earlier theories by newer ones; rather, it involves a change in the level and scope of explanation through which the phenomenon of design is understood. Using an analytical review of the literature and conceptual comparison, this paper examines this development through three main analytical strands. The first, associated with systems thinking, focuses on problem structure, components, relations, and constraints. The second, represented by cognitive and process-oriented approaches, shifts attention toward the design process, designer reflection, and the reciprocal transformation of problem and solution. The third, emerging with the introduction of complexity science, expands the analytical scope to interactions among multiple agents, feedback, emergence, and system dynamics. Comparison of these strands suggests that they should not be understood as successive stages, or as a linear progression from inadequate to more complete theories, but rather as different levels of design reality brought within the scope of explanation. Accordingly, the evolution of design theory can be understood as a gradual expansion of the level of analysis from problem structure, to the design process, and ultimately to system dynamics. This perspective further suggests that the value of complexity-oriented approaches in architecture lies not merely in generating or describing complex forms, but in providing an analytical vocabulary and scope for examining interaction, feedback, and emergent behavior, provided that the underlying mechanisms of complexity are explicitly defined and metaphorical uses of complexity concepts are avoided.
