Burnout Among Moroccan Dentists: Exploring Associated Factors

Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of burnout among dentists in Morocco and identify specific factors contributing to this condition. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among ۶۱ dentists, including ۵۲.۵% women, with an average age of ۳۳.۱۳±۱.۲۹ years, working in both private and public sectors. Burnout levels were assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results: The survey revealed that ۳۹.۳% of participants experienced high emotional exhaustion (EE), ۴۱.۳% had high depersonalization, and ۶۹.۸% reported a low sense of personal accomplishment (PA). Analysis of risk factors indicated significant associations with EE. Female dentists were approximately five times more likely to experience EE than their male counterparts (odds ratio [OR] = ۴.۹; ۹۵% confidence interval [CI],۱.۵%, ۱۵.۳%; P=۰.۰۱). Additionally, a low socioeconomic status was a substantial risk factor, with an OR of ۳.۰۶ (۹۵% CI, ۲.۵۱%, ۱۸۵.۸۳%; P<۰.۰۰۱). In contrast, marital status and the perception of a gap between expectations and reality were not significantly associated with EE. Discussion: These findings underscore the need for healthcare administrators to enhance efforts to protect dentists’ mental health and address burnout. Targeted interventions and support systems should be implemented to mitigate burnout and improve job satisfaction among dental professionals.
