چکیده مقاله:
The relations of the Imams of the Prophet’s Household (Ahl al-Bayt) with unjust rulers constitute an important issue in the history and political thought of Shiism. On the one hand, the power structures of unjust governments were often incompatible with the justice-oriented principles of Islam; on the other hand, the followers of the Ahl al-Bayt were inevitably required to live within the prevailing political and social structures. Accordingly, the manner in which relations with such governments were regulated became a strategic concern in the conduct and political practice of the Imams. In this context, the Imamate of Imam al-Rida, which coincided with major political developments during the Abbasid period, particularly the policies of al-Ma’mun, provides a significant case for understanding this issue. The central question of the present study is: What principles and strategies underpinned Imam al-Rida’s pattern of relations with unjust rulers within the context of the political and social transformations of the Abbasid era? Employing a descriptive-analytical method and drawing upon historical and hadith sources, this study examines Imam al-Rida’s conduct and political positions in confronting the Abbasid rulers and seeks to identify and analyze the pattern governing these relations. The findings indicate that Imam al-Rida’s relations with the Abbasid rulers were structured around a multidimensional pattern grounded in political realism, the preservation of the status and authority of the Imamate, and the guidance of Shiite society. Within this framework, strategies such as refraining from legitimizing unjust rule, carefully managing confrontation and accommodation, making prudent use of politically imposed opportunities, strengthening the communication networks of the Shiites, and concentrating on the intellectual and cultural guidance of society played central roles. Accordingly, the conduct of Imam al-Rida demonstrates a model of guidance-oriented political action in the face of dominant power structures—one that, while preserving fundamental religious principles, enabled the prudent management of complex political circumstances.
