چکیده مقاله:
The Imamate of Imam al-Sajjād (۶۱–۹۴ AH) coincided with the Umayyad consolidation of power and the rise of the ʿUthmāniyya movement, which, backed by the state, promoted a politicized narrative to legitimize Umayyad rule and delegitimize the Ahl al-Bayt. This study investigates the interactive strategies Imam al-Sajjād employed to counter the ʿUthmāniyya’s intellectual foundations under political repression and assesses their social effects on the Shiʿi community.Using a historical-analytical methodology and drawing from both Shiʿi and Sunni sources, the research conceptualizes the Imam’s strategies across three levels: epistemic-doctrinal, educational-cultural, and social-network-oriented. The social outcomes are measured through indicators like the reconstruction of Shiʿi identity, the strengthening of scholarly networks, and the erosion of rival discourses. The findings reveal that Imam al-Sajjād avoided direct political confrontation, instead adopting a strategy of “epistemic resistance” and “soft cultural action.” Through supplications, training of elites, promoting a knowledge-based model of Imamate, and indirect critiques of ʿUthmānī doctrines, he neutralized their intellectual influence. These efforts preserved Shiʿi cohesion and laid the groundwork for the subsequent Imamate of Imam al-Bāqir, presenting Imam al-Sajjād’s approach as an active, strategic model of engagement with ideological deviation.
