چکیده مقاله:

Chronic and infected wounds are a significant health problem due to sustained inflammation, production of reactive oxygen species, bacterial biofilm, and tissue regeneration failure. However, traditional treatments are ineffective, as they target only one part of the problem. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a green tea polyphenol, has shown promising results in treating wounds due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and pro-regenerative properties. However, its application is limited due to its poor stability, rapid degradation, and low retention in the wound bed. Recently, metal phenolic network (MPN) nanosystems, which are formed by the coordination of polyphenolic compounds with multivalent metal ions, were found to be promising in resolving the limitations associated with traditional wound care products. This is due to the improved stability, bioavailability, and controlled release of the drug, in addition to the synergistic effects of the coordinated metal ions, which provide antimicrobial, catalytic, and pro-angiogenic effects. This review aims to discuss the recent advances in the application of EGCG-based metal phenolic network systems in wound care, particularly in drug delivery systems for the treatment of chronic and infected wounds.
