Assessing the Efficacy of Think-Pair-Share Strategy on Achievement in Genetics Concepts among Secondary School Biology Students

This research examined how the Think-Pair-Share instructional strategy influences students' understanding of genetics among senior secondary school learners in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT Abuja, Nigeria. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the investigation. Using a quasi-experimental design, the researchers engaged ۱۲۰ students over a six-week teaching period. Students’ learning outcomes were assessed using a Genetics Achievement Test (GAT), while data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test. The findings revealed an encouraging result: students who learned through the TPS strategy performed noticeably better on post-tests compared to those taught using conventional method. Interestingly, when it came to gender differences, both male and female students showed similar levels of achievement, suggesting the strategy works equally well for everyone. Based on these findings, it was recommended among others that biology teachers in senior secondary schools be encouraged to adopt the Think-Pair-Share strategy to enhance students’ academic achievement in complex topics such as genetics.
