چکیده مقاله:

Background: Given the global rising incidence of type ۱ diabetes (T۱DM), this research was conducted to assess the demographic and laboratory findings of children with T۱DM, based on the status of microalbuminuria. Methods: This cross-sectional study compared the demographic and laboratory characteristics of all children under the age of ۱۸ years who were diagnosed with T۱DM at least for two years and have been referred to the referral Children’s Hospital in Babol, Iran. Age, sex, duration of diabetes, body mass index (BMI) and average of three measures of hemoglobin A۱c were compared in two groups with and without microalbuminuria. Urinary albumin excretion of ۳۰ to ۳۰۰ mg/۲۴ hours was considered as microalbuminuria. Results: In the current study of ۹۷ patients, ۷۵ (۷۷.۳%) had microalbuminuria; while ۲۲ (۲۲.۷%) did not experience microalbuminuria. There was no statistical difference in sex, age, BMI, duration and HbA۱c distribution between patients with microalbuminuria and without microalbuminuria. In the univariate model, odds of microalbuminuria increase by ۲.۶ percent by each unit increased in HbA۱c; however, this association was not statistically significant (odds ratio (OR): ۱.۰۲۶, confidence interval (CI) ۹۵%: ۰.۷۷۹-۱.۳۲۵). No statistically significant association was also found between microalbuminuria status and sex, age, BMI, or duration. Conclusion: Although the age, sex, duration of diabetes, BMI and hemoglobin A۱c did not have statistically significant difference between the two groups, regular and periodic monitoring of glycemic control status and screening of protein excretion in urine, in order to identify early diabetic nephropathy is recommended in children with T۱DM.
