چکیده مقاله:
Artemisia annua L., an herbaceous plant native to Asia, has gained significant attention due to its principal bioactive compound, artemisinin, which is used in the treatment of malaria. However, a comprehensive understanding of the chemical composition of different parts of this plant beyond artemisinin remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the chemical profile of various parts (e.g., leaves, stems, and flowers) of Artemisia annua L. to identify potential new bioactive compounds and explore their therapeutic applications. These compounds belonged to various chemical classes such as terpenes, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. Notably, significant variations in the chemical composition were observed among different plant parts, suggesting a complex interplay of factors influencing the biosynthesis of these compounds. The results revealed that the aerial parts of Artemisia annua L. were rich in sesquiterpene lactones, with artemisinin as the predominant compound. However, other bioactive compounds, including various flavonoids and phenolic acids, were also identified. These compounds have been reported to possess a wide range of pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the phytochemical diversity of Artemisia annua L. and highlight its potential as a source of natural products for drug discovery. The identified compounds can serve as lead compounds for the development of novel therapeutics. Further investigations are warranted to elucidate the mechanisms of action of these compounds and their potential synergistic effects with artemisinin.
