چکیده مقاله:

Economic numbness has emerged as a subtle yet powerful psychological response to prolonged economic volatility, eroding agency before it becomes visible in behaviour. Inflation, poverty, unemployment, media-driven stress, and chronic uncertainty accumulate over time, weakening individuals’ sense of control and fostering avoidance, disengagement, and emotional withdrawal. These patterns mirror mechanisms of learned helplessness, as previous studies on chronic stress and agency loss have highlighted similar dynamics, suggesting that economic numbness encompasses not only financial strain but also a deeper cognitive and affective shutdown. This state undermines both individual decision-making and collective participation, underscoring its significance for economic resilience. Its relevance extends across diverse cultural and economic contexts, making it a global concern. This study adopts a conceptual review approach, synthesizing recent theoretical and empirical findings to clarify the contours of economic numbness. Research highlights promising strategies to counteract this condition. Interventions grounded in learned optimism and learned control, combined with supportive relationships, stable structures, meaningful routines, and a sense of belonging, may restore agency and mitigate psychological paralysis associated with economic stress. The literature portrays economic numbness as a multidimensional phenomenon shaped by economic, social, and psychological forces. Yet, despite its growing relevance, precise measurement tools and robust empirical models remain scarce. There is a pressing need for quantitative, systematic, and longitudinal research to clarify underlying mechanisms and evaluate interventions across diverse contexts. Insights into economic numbness can also inform more effective economic and social policy design, making its study essential for both individual well-being and collective resilience in societies facing persistent crises.
