چکیده مقاله:
This review focuses on investigating how gene therapy emerged as a potential treatment for depression and major depressive disorder (MDD). Depression is a complex mental health problem with substantial heritability contributing to its onset and, alone, is one of the leading causes of disability, affecting an estimated ۳۰۰ million people globally. However, conventional treatment modalities frequently prove inadequate, emphasizing the pressing requirement for novel therapeutic strategies. Though there have been recent articles that have detailed several important genes linked to depression, like BDNF and GDNF, and have mentioned epigenetics as influencing the expression of these genes. The article talks about the emergence of precision medicine and the "omics" techniques that can lead to personalized treatment plans to administer interventions that are personalized based on the patient's genetics. However, while existing knowledge has grown to the point of identifying a number of key genetic factors, scientists still do not understand straightforwardly how these components combine with environmental forces to influence essentially depressive states. This review highlights the necessity for integrating insights gained from genetics data with therapies available to increase the efficacy of therapies used and consequently their impact on improving the quality of life of individuals burdened by depressive disorders.
