Epilepsy is marked by recurrent seizures from abnormal brain activity. This study investigates the astrocytic sodium-potassium pump's role in regulating ionic balance and suppressing seizures using a neuron-astrocyte mathematical model. Optogenetic stimulation was simulated to activate astrocytes and enhance pump activity. Increasing pump activity reduced seizure severity and neuronal firing. This calcium-independent anti-seizure effect is linked to potassium removal and ionic regulation. The astrocytic pump is proposed as a central seizure-suppression mechanism and a novel therapeutic target.
