Growing Up, Growing Green: Towards Climate-Resilient Urban Densification

Urban densification is promoted as a route to sustainable cities, yet poorly planned intensification erodes tree canopy, weakens ecosystem services, and intensifies heat, undermining the liveability it is meant to protect. This paper argues that housing growth and green infrastructure need not be competing objectives, and proposes a conceptual framework for climate-resilient urban densification built around five interconnected domains: growth and housing, green infrastructure, climate resilience, health and liveability, and governance and monitoring. Drawing on recent planning, ecology, and public health literature, the framework is shown to be operationalisable through integrated indicators, digital planning tools, and adaptive governance.
