چکیده مقاله:
In the contemporary landscape of English Language Teaching (ELT) and literary studies, the focus has traditionally remained on curriculum design and cognitive strategies. However, the socio-emotional dimension of the classroom—specifically the quality of the Teacher-Student Relationship (TSR)—is increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of pedagogical success. The central problem addressed in this study is the declining levels of intrinsic motivation and active engagement among students in English Language and Literature programs. When the interpersonal bond between the educator and the learner is neglected, students often experience heightened foreign language anxiety and a mechanical approach to literary analysis, which stifles deep comprehension and critical thinking. The findings indicate that teacher-student relationships characterized by high levels of empathy, trust, and academic support serve as a powerful catalyst for student motivation. In the context of English literature, students with a strong rapport with their instructors demonstrated a ۴۰% higher tendency to participate in classroom discussions and a significantly deeper engagement with complex texts. Furthermore, positive TSR was found to act as a buffer against academic burnout. Educators who adopted “autonomy-supportive” communication styles fostered an environment where students felt safe to take linguistic risks, directly leading to improved proficiency and a more profound appreciation for literary nuances. The study concludes that the teacher-student relationship is not merely a supplementary “soft skill” but a core instructional necessity in English education. To enhance academic outcomes, it is recommended that teacher professional development programs prioritize emotional intelligence and relational pedagogy. Institutions should move beyond purely content-based training and equip educators with the skills to build inclusive, supportive, and motivation-rich classroom environments.
