Introduction: In the rapidly evolving landscape of ۲۱st-century education, traditional rote-learning methodologies are increasingly failing to prepare secondary school students for complex academic and real-world challenges. Modern pedagogical paradigms emphasize the transition from passive knowledge acquisition to active cognitive engagement. Inquiry-based instruction (IBI) has emerged as a cornerstone educational strategy designed to place students at the center of the learning process. By prompting students to formulate questions, investigate authentic problems, analyze diverse data sources, and construct evidence-based arguments, IBI aims to systematically cultivate high-order cognitive skills, particularly critical thinking. Despite its theoretical promise, the empirical connection between structured inquiry models and measurable critical thinking outcomes in secondary education requires comprehensive investigation, especially regarding how teachers facilitate this transition.Objective: This study aims to investigate the impact of inquiry-based instruction on the development of critical thinking skills among secondary school students. Specifically, the research evaluates the effectiveness of a structured, guided inquiry framework compared to conventional teacher-centered teaching methods. Additionally, it examines how specific sub-skills of critical thinking—namely analysis, evaluation, inference, and deductive reasoning—are affected by prolonged exposure to inquiry-based classroom environments.Methodology: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed over a full academic semester. The target population consisted of secondary school students in urban public schools. A sample of ۱۲۰ grade-۱۰ students was selected through cluster sampling and randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n=۶۰n=۶۰, receiving inquiry-based instruction) or a control group (n=۶۰n=۶۰, receiving traditional lecture-based instruction). The experimental group’s curriculum was redesigned around the ۵E Inquiry Model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate), while the control group followed the standard textbook-driven curriculum. Data were gathered using the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) Form M before and after the intervention. Quantitative data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) to control for initial differences in pretest scores.Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate that inquiry-based instruction is a highly effective pedagogical approach for fostering critical thinking skills in secondary schools. Shifting the classroom dynamics from passive listening to active, structured investigation enables students to develop the essential cognitive tools required to analyze complex information and make reasoned judgments. Consequently, educational policymakers, curriculum designers, and school administrators must prioritize the integration of inquiry practices into secondary school curricula. Furthermore, comprehensive professional development programs should be designed to equip teachers with the necessary instructional scaffolding strategies to implement inquiry-based learning effectively.
