Blood flow in the blood vessels represents one of the major factors that ensure the normal functioning of the cardiac-vascular system and the success of any interventional procedure, including the placement of a stent. This work focuses on the hydrodynamics of blood velocity in a cylindrical blood vessel under the assumptions of a stationary, laminar, and Newtonian flow and explores the analysis of the radial velocity distribution from the center to the wall boundary, as predicted by the classical Poiseuille model. The mathematical relationships underlying blood flow, which depend on the velocity due to the pressure difference, the dynamic viscosity of blood, and the radius of the blood vessel, are derived theoretically. Finally, the influence of certain parameters on the velocity distribution will be discussed through some numerical simulations. Results show a parabolic velocity profile, with a peak velocity at the center and a zero velocity at the wall boundary. Increasing the viscosity of the blood reduces the peak and mean velocity of the flowing blood and results in a flat velocity profile. Conversely, the increase in the pressure difference results in a linear increase in the velocity of flowing blood. These results and others form the basis of advanced research studies in the field of vascular mechanics and computational fluid dynamics.
