A Review Article on Working Memory (WM) and its Role on L۲ Students with Reading Comprehension Difficulty

Abstract Working memory (WM) that is regarded as a basic cognitive system for the temporary storage and manipulation of data plays a crucial role in complicated cognitive-based tasks such as learning and comprehension. In L۲ context, reading comprehension often imposes important challenges, especially for those students with limited WM capability. This review article synthesizes this study on the interplay between WM and reading comprehension difficulties among L۲ students. It explores how WM barriers influence the linguistic input processing, merging of syntactic and semantic data, and overall L۲ students’ reading skill. This study also provides some information concerning reading comprehension, WM and reading comprehension, WM and L۲ learners’ reading problems, and major reading problems faced by L۲ learners. In fact, by reviewing previous studies, this review article presents a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between WM and reading comprehension in L۲ contexts, recommending perspectives for teachers, scholars, and language practitioners seeking to optimizing learning for those L۲ learners who have problems with reading comprehension.
